Our Story

KombuJoy was born long before it became a brand. It began as a deeply personal journey, a fifteen year struggle with Irritable Bowel Syndrome that pushed me onto a path of soul searching, seeking relief beyond medication and frustration. In that search, I discovered both Jesus Christ and kombucha, not just as a drink, but as a quiet ritual of healing.

My IBS was not just uncomfortable, it was completely disruptive to my body, mind and spirit. The bloating grew so severe at times that I had to take sick leave. Back then, relief came from medication or consuming large amounts of fibre, which helped, but always at a cost. It was frightening and draining, and it showed me that every part of my digestive system was screaming out for more change.

That is when kombucha entered my life. I tried commercial versions for a while, but soon learned they were often brewed with foreign tea bags containing caffeine. So I made a choice: to create something free of caffeine, rooted in local ingredients, gentle enough to enjoy anytime. A drink that supported healing instead of interrupting it.

And so I started brewing at home. For over five years, I brewed consistently, studying fermentation, refining the craft, and learning its rhythm with patience and devotion. My goal was simple: to create a brew my body could finally agree with.

But the true turning point came from the centre: my wife. She encouraged me not just to brew for relief, but to brew for joy. To make it delicious, uplifting, something that could brighten the spirit as much as it soothed the body.

Then something remarkable happened. During menstruation, she noticed a 12 ounce bottle brought near instant relief from cramps. She felt the same probiotic comfort I had been experiencing for years. Soon, friends and family felt it too.

The name KombuJoy came naturally as I journeyed through my healing, and the blend of colours followed close behind. But I couldn’t envision its identity. For many months I struggled to find its shape, its home.

Then my family was invited to an Easter egg hunt by our neighbours. The highlight, for me, was watching the children play with a cluster of balloons they’d stumbled upon and turned into a game. They took turns striking it as hard as they could into the air, delighting in that colourful, shapeless thing spinning wildly above them. I joined in too, caught up in the simple pleasure of it.

Little Zion, only two, soon grew restless waiting for his turn. So I lifted him over the forest of outstretched hands, and somehow that set Coco, the neighbours’ adorable dog, bounding into the fray. He leapt, sending the balloons soaring with a flick of his nose, and everyone cheered and laughed in amazement.

In that moment, I understood what joy truly meant, and why the little part of it I’d discovered was worth sharing. I had found its home.

And that is how KombuJoy was truly born. Today, every bottle carries that same intention, healing, comfort, craft, and above all, JOY that is found in every sip.
